Lasik eye surgery available in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH – LASIK eye surgery is now available in Portsmouth.

Eye Specialists of Ohio just celebrated the 30th anniversary of cataract and laser surgery.

“We have nine locations, five of them being Accrediting Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) accredited Ambulatory Surgery Centers, ranging as far north as Worthington, as far west as Wilmington, as far east as Lancaster and as far south as Portsmouth,” said Sabe Jackson, administrator of the Ohio eye specialist.

Jackson said most cataract surgeries are done in Portsmouth.

“We do a lot of cataract surgery, and LASIK is another service we offer now,” Jackson said. “We have eight doctors who all perform cataract surgeries and one of our doctors has performed the most cataract surgeries in the state of Ohio.”

A cataract is a clouding of the clear lens of your eye.

Jackson said patients normally experience minimal discomfort after procedures due to new technology.

“Recovery, both physical and visual, is quick,” Jackson said. “Many patients drive and return to their usual level of activity the day after surgery.”

Tuesday, February 8, the first LASIK operation took place in Portsmouth.

“The first LASIK operation was this morning, but in saying that, Dr. Jay Egolf has performed thousands of LASIK operations and has worked at our Circleville facility for 20 years,” Jackson said.

Jackson said once the Portsmouth site received accreditation to perform LASIK surgery, Dr Egolf began moving surgeries from Circleville to Portsmouth.

LASIK is an FDA-approved refractive procedure designed to reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

“Everything went according to plan this morning, all the patients left extremely happy, and most importantly, we can do this locally,” Jackson said.

Jackson said it was huge to be able to do lasik in Portsmouth.

“Transportation is a big issue with a lot of local patients, so being able to do pre-op, post-op and their surgery locally, they don’t have to leave town because everything can be done here. affordable and cheaper than some big cities,” Jackson said.

Travel times for many patients are reduced by the local location.

“They have a short drive to get LASIK surgery and get home in a few hours instead of spending all day driving two hours north, spending time at the surgery center, then driving two hours. south,” Jackson said. .

The equipment used for the surgery is all laser.

“It’s all laser LASIK, unlike the last few years where there was actually a laser part blade part where they cut the lens flat with a blade and bent it back, unlike now where we can just use a laser” , Jackson said.

Jackson said LASIK is a two-step process.

“Step 1 is where the doctor uses the Intralase femtosecond laser to create a very thin flap on the surface of the cornea,” Jackson said. “Stage 2 is where the doctor lifts the flap and uses another laser to reshape the cornea.”

Jackson said each case is unique.

“Our personalized approach ensures that each patient’s comfort and progress is carefully tuned,” Jackson said. “Our doctors are committed to your cataract and laser vision correction procedure from start to finish.”
