Jan Blachowicz went to eye surgery on Monday
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz suffered a cut near the tear duct area of his left eye in the first round of the main event at UFC Vegas 54 on Saturday.
The 205-pound top contender took on No. 3-ranked Aleksandar Rakić in the featured bout at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The game suddenly ended early in the third period after Rakic suffered a knee injury which rendered him unable to continue.
At the event’s post-fight press conference, Blachowicz revealed that he will hopefully undergo “minor surgery” on Monday to repair the damage to his eye.
“I’m going to have a little surgery on Monday on that eye. Doctors say, maybe it’s going to be small, or maybe it’s going to be bigger. He doesn’t know yet. He has to check,” Blachowicz said.
With the win over No. 3-ranked Rakic, Blachowicz believes he has earned a shot at winning the title he once possessed.
“I was number one, Rakic was number three. For me it’s obvious. I’m now the number one contender for the title shot,” Blachowicz said.
